iPhone 12 mini Intermittent “No Service” Repair – Logic Board Rebuild Case
Repair Case Overview
This iPhone 12 mini was sent in by another repair technician with an intermittent “No Service” issue.
When a device sometimes has signal and sometimes doesn’t, it usually means the mainboard components are fine, but there’s an intermittent internal connection fault — often caused by partial separation (semi-detachment) of the middle board layers rather than a failed baseband chip.
Diagnosis and Logic Board Work
After separating the board layers, we found exactly what we suspected: more than ten solder joints had lifted on the middle layer. Once these were re-soldered and reconnected, the signal problem was completely resolved — the phone regained stable service.
Additional Findings
During single-board power-on testing, the current spike reached 280 mA, about 200 mA higher than normal.
Normally, such a high start-up current points to a U2 (charging IC) fault, but in this case:

Charging worked perfectly.

USB connection was normal.

The U2 chip showed no abnormal heat.
Using thermal imaging, we located unexpected heat near the bottom-right corner of the power management chip (PMIC). Measuring resistance around the area revealed that the memory power line, which should show 200 Ω +, had dropped to around 20 Ω — a semi-short circuit condition.
Despite that, the phone still functioned normally with only slightly reduced standby time.
Repair Decision
Repairing the short would require replacing the top logic-board layer, which involves a high-cost rebuild — more expensive than purchasing another iPhone 12 mini.
Since the issue doesn’t affect performance or functionality, the most practical decision is to leave it as is and monitor long-term performance.
